How Optimization Made Judgment Optional
Prologue: Halifax, or how reasonable decisions stacked into catastrophe
In December 1917, in the port of Halifax, nothing happened suddenly.
Two ships entered a narrow harbor channel. One of them, the French cargo ship Mont-Blanc, was carrying a highly volatile mix of explosives. The other, Imo, was navigating in the opposite direction. What followed was not chaos, but process.
First decision: both ships assumed the other would yield.
Second decision: warning signals were exchanged, then ignored.
Third decision: the collision occurred, but it seemed manageable. Ships collide all the time.
Fourth decision: Mont-Blanc caught fire. Fire is bad, but fires are common.
Fifth decision: no immediate evacuation. No port shutdown. No panic.
Each step, taken in isolation, was reasonable.
Each relied on the same silent assumption: this will probably be fine.
As the burning ship drifted toward the shoreline, people gathered. Dock workers, sailors, civilians. They watched. Some were curious. Some were confused. None of this behavior was irrational. Humans observe before reacting. They always have.
Halifax was not the result of one bad choice.
It was the result of normal behavior iterated inside a system with no tolerance for delay or ambiguity.
That distinction matters.
I. Normal behavior doesn’t disappear. Systems lose patience.
We like to believe disasters happen because people panic, act stupidly, or break rules. In reality, disasters often happen because people behave exactly as expected.
We still do this today.
There are countless videos of accidents, fires, structural failures. People don’t run first. They film. They stand. They assume there will be time. Time usually exists.
A recent example is the nightclub fire in Switzerland on New Year’s Eve. Flames spread with shocking speed. The environment became lethal in seconds. And yet, many people did not flee immediately. They recorded.
Not because they were suicidal.
Not because they were stupid.
But because the brain defaults to observation before action, especially when danger does not match previous experience.
Humans evolved to assess before reacting.
Optimized systems punish that reflex.
II. The brain is not “intelligence.” It is an adaptive machine.
The human brain does not preserve skills out of respect for tradition. It preserves what it uses.
Children good at mathematics are trained further.
Athletes repeat movements until the nervous system rewires itself.
Musicians accumulate thousands of hours of correction and prediction.
Cognition works the same way.
If you calculate mentally every day, the skill remains.
If you write by hand, linguistic structure stays sharp.
If you navigate physically, spatial maps persist.
If you don’t, they fade.
The brain does not protest.
It optimizes.
III. Cognitive offloading was progress. Until we offloaded judgment.
Externalizing mental effort is not decadence. It is civilization.
Fire changed biology.
Tools extended strength.
Writing preserved memory.
Libraries scaled knowledge.
Computers removed arithmetic burden.
At every stage, humans still had to think.
Libraries forced effort. You searched catalogs. You followed references. You evaluated sources. Slow, but cognitively active.
Search engines accelerated retrieval, but still demanded judgment. You compared results. You checked credibility.
Now comes AI.
AI does not retrieve.
It answers.
Confidently. Fluently. Sometimes incorrectly. And often without friction.
Even Google now places AI summaries at the top of results. Many users never scroll past them. The answer looks complete.
The effort gradient collapses.
IV. Passive information and the rise of cognitive fatigue
Reading is active construction. The brain must imagine scenes, infer tone, simulate meaning.
Television removed that effort. Meaning arrived fully formed.
The internet fragmented attention. Social media completed the transformation by coupling passive consumption with constant reward.
The issue is not distraction.
It is exhaustion.
An exhausted brain does not analyze.
It simplifies.
V. From village news to global overload
For most of human history, information volume matched cognitive capacity.
Before print, you heard about your village.
With newspapers, about the city.
With television, about the nation.
Each expansion came with limits: pacing, editorial filters, physical distribution.
Social media removed pacing entirely.
Now, in a single scrolling session, the brain processes wars, crimes, scandals, moral outrage, expert opinions, amateur certainty, humor, tragedy. All flattened into the same attention channel.
The brain evolved to process threat locally and sequentially. Instead, it ingests a continuous global feed.
The result is not awareness.
It is fatigue.
Fatigued minds defer.
VI. Social media: training the reflex, not the mind
Social media did not reshape human cognition by accident. It did so by design.
Unlike previous media, social platforms do not merely distribute information. They engineer exposure over time. They decide what appears, how often, in what sequence, and with what emotional charge. The user experiences this as choice. The system experiences it as optimization.
The objective is not truth, balance, or understanding.
It is retention.
This distinction matters.
Human cognition evolved to process information that was local, limited in volume, sequential, and embedded in context. Social media removes all four constraints simultaneously.
In a single scrolling session, a user may encounter war footage, personal tragedy, conspiracy theory, financial panic, moral outrage, expert commentary, amateur certainty, humor, and affirmation. None of it is ordered by relevance. All of it competes in the same cognitive channel.
The brain does not evaluate this stream analytically.
It adapts to it.
From information overload to cognitive fatigue
Historically, informational load scaled slowly.
Before print, you heard about events in your village.
With newspapers, about the city.
With television, about the nation.
Each expansion increased scope but preserved pacing through editorial filters, time slots, and physical distribution.
Social media removes pacing entirely.
Now the brain is exposed to a continuous global feed. Not because all of it matters, but because all of it competes for attention.
The result is not enlightenment.
It is cognitive exhaustion.
An exhausted brain does not analyze. It simplifies.
Simplification takes predictable forms: emotional shortcuts, binary thinking, distrust of complexity, attraction to certainty. This is not a failure of intelligence. It is a survival response to overload.
Radicalization as training, not persuasion
Radicalization in social media environments is often misunderstood as sudden ideological conversion. In reality, it is a gradual conditioning process driven by repetition, familiarity, and narrowing exposure.
It rarely begins with extreme claims. It begins with ambiguity. Content that “just asks questions,” hints at hidden inconsistencies, or frames itself as skepticism rather than belief.
The user watches.
The system records.
Algorithms do not care what the content says. They care how long attention is held. If one video retains attention slightly longer than another, it is reinforced. The next suggestion is similar, but marginally more assertive. The escalation is incremental, because abrupt shifts trigger resistance.
Over time, repetition does the work.
The same themes appear daily, framed by different creators, presented as independent discoveries. Familiarity replaces evaluation. What appears often begins to feel normal. What feels normal begins to feel plausible.
Eventually, the platform suggests communities. Groups. Channels where the same assumptions are shared and validated. At this point, the user is no longer merely consuming content. They are inhabiting an interpretive environment.
Contradictory information does not disappear because it was disproven. It disappears because it stops appearing. The cognitive environment narrows until alternative perspectives feel artificial, hostile, or manipulated.
After months of exposure, disengagement becomes costly. Leaving would require reevaluating accumulated beliefs, social ties, and emotional investments. Staying is easier.
Radicalization, in this sense, is not persuasion.
It is attention training over time.
The crucial shift: from thinking to reacting
What social media trains most effectively is not belief, but reaction.
Speed over reflection.
Certainty over nuance.
Belonging over understanding.
Users learn, implicitly, that pausing is costly. That doubt reduces visibility. That strong reactions are rewarded with validation and reach.
Judgment becomes a liability.
Reaction becomes currency.
By the time extreme conclusions appear, they no longer feel extreme. They feel consistent with a cognitive environment shaped over months.
Social media does not make people irrational.
It makes rational thought expensive.
Bridge to AI
This matters because AI does not enter a neutral cognitive landscape.
It enters a population already fatigued, overloaded, trained to react rather than reflect, and accustomed to outsourcing judgment to external systems.
In that environment, AI does not primarily function as a tool.
It functions as relief.
And once judgment has already been weakened, delegating it further feels natural.
VII. The erosion of basic skills is not decay. It’s optimization.
Mental arithmetic fades because machines are faster.
Spelling erodes because autocorrect intervenes.
Orientation weakens because GPS instructs.
Memory thins because search replaces recall.
These are rational adaptations.
The system rewards interface compliance, not internal competence.
Judgment becomes costly.
Reaction becomes cheap.
VIII. AI as authority: the final offload
AI enters a population already fatigued, overloaded, trained to react, and accustomed to external validation.
In this context, AI feels like relief.
The shift is subtle: from using tools to accepting conclusions.
A concrete case illustrates this clearly.
A woman used an AI system for what appeared to be a harmless experiment: interpreting coffee grounds. She presented a subjective narrative shaped by suspicion. The AI responded coherently, extending the story.
The AI was not lying.
It was completing a narrative.
The failure occurred when responsibility was delegated. The output was treated as objective judgment rather than speculative interpretation.
AI does not correct bias.
It mirrors it.
This is not stupidity. It is load management.
AI is not trusted because it is right.
It is trusted because it speaks last.
IX. Halifax again: process, delegation, no margin
In Halifax, no one made a catastrophic decision. They made many small ones, each reasonable, each deferring responsibility.
Modern systems invite the same behavior.
“If it were dangerous, the system would stop me.”
“If it were wrong, the AI would flag it.”
“If it mattered, someone else would intervene.”
Optimized systems do not absorb this behavior.
They amplify its consequences.
X. Conclusion: error tolerance is expensive, and we refused to pay
We know how to build systems that tolerate human error.
They require redundancy, buffers, slack, training, and time.
All look inefficient.
All cost money.
None optimize quarterly metrics.
So we optimized instead.
We removed slack.
We removed redundancy.
We removed pause.
Then we placed cognitively fatigued humans inside these systems and demanded flawless performance.
Halifax was not an anomaly.
It was a preview.
Optimized systems do not fail loudly.
They fail politely, while everyone follows instructions.
